On May 2, 2025, a soft opening for the restored Pacheco Marsh, part of the Lower Walnut Creek Restoration Project—the largest public works project in Contra Costa County—occurred. James Wilson from the John Muir Land Trust reported the first confirmed sighting of a long-tailed weasel at the site, indicating the success of the restoration efforts. After years of neglect, the marsh was transformed from a dumping ground into a thriving habitat.

The project involved extensive cleanup and engineering, funded by over $11 million, to restore natural functions and increase flood capacity. The marsh, now home to ten special-status species, also features recreational amenities like trails and a kayak launch. Local leaders emphasized that conserving land is vital for future generations and stressed the need for bipartisan support in environmental efforts. Pacheco Marsh is open daily, promoting both ecological health and public access to nature.
