The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) has received about $79,000 from the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks through the Great Lakes Local Action Fund. This funding will aid in restoring habitats along 12 Mile Creek, improving biodiversity and water quality in this vital ecosystem that supports Brook and Brown Trout.

The restoration projects will occur at two sites: St. John’s Centre Conservation Area and Camp Wetaskiwin. NPCA plans to engage local youth in stabilizing stream banks using bioengineering techniques, addressing issues like erosion worsened by climate change. Previous efforts included planting 1,650 trees, and the new initiative will involve more than 150 volunteers.

NPCA emphasizes the importance of these projects for local ecosystems and community health. The Great Lakes Local Action Fund plays a critical role in supporting local conservation initiatives, ensuring both the natural environment and community recreational needs are met.
