The U.S. Department of the Interior has halted over $2 million in federal grants intended for restoration projects in the Mid Klamath Basin, which included wildfire prevention and Chinook salmon surveys. Associate Director Carol Earnest emphasized the importance of this data for understanding salmon populations and informing fishing guidelines. The Interior Department stated the grants no longer align with U.S. Fish and Wildlife priorities, but Earnest noted the projects fit federal goals for recreation and habitat restoration. The loss of funding is a significant setback for the Mid Klamath Watershed Council, which is now exploring alternative funding options amid an ongoing government shutdown.
