The Yurok Tribe and Round Valley Indian Tribes have signed a Treaty of Friendship to restore the Eel River, addressing years of fisheries decline. The agreement, signed on October 28, 2025, at the Eel River Canyon Preserve, emphasizes their shared cultural ties and commitment to ecological restoration. President Joe Parker of the Round Valley Tribes highlighted the river’s importance to their people, while Yurok Chairman Joseph L. James noted the value of their expertise in river restoration. As PG&E decommissions the Potter Valley Hydroelectric Project, which obstructs fish habitats, both tribes aim to revive native fish populations and strengthen their practices through collaboration. The Treaty represents a significant step towards ecological healing and cultural preservation.
