The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has allocated over $3.1 million in watershed restoration grants, with Berks County set to receive $317,872. This funding supports streambank restoration and agricultural improvements in the Upper Little Swatara Creek watershed, specifically along Crosskill Creek and an unnamed tributary. A multi-year water quality monitoring program will also be implemented. The project aims to reduce pollutants by 2,215 pounds of nitrogen, 5,901 pounds of phosphorus, and 223 tons of sediment annually. DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley emphasized the importance of clean water for community health and highlighted efforts to combat nonpoint source pollution affecting many of Pennsylvania’s watersheds.
