The Great Lakes Watershed Institute (GLWI) will open a new lab at Alma College in August 2026, aimed at enhancing research on freshwater systems. This state-of-the-art facility will include 16 student research stations and spaces for integrating coursework with hands-on research. Focused on watershed science, the lab will support studies in geochemistry, microbiology, and toxicology, engaging students with real-world data and local stakeholders.

The GLWI offers paid summer research opportunities and fosters collaborations with community colleges and K–12 schools to promote environmental education. This initiative aims to build a network of students ready to tackle freshwater sustainability challenges, providing them with professional experiences and pathways to further education and careers in environmental fields.
