The Chesapeake Bay’s health has improved over time, earning a “C” grade from the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science, up 6% from last year but unchanged since 2019. Despite progress, expert forecasts suggest the region will miss its 2025 nutrient pollution cleanup target, marking the third missed deadline since 2000. Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen emphasized the need for ambitious new targets.

For the first time, the report addressed environmental justice disparities using the CDC’s Environmental Justice Index, pointing out that cities and rural areas suffer greater environmental health impacts compared to suburbs. Bill Dennison highlighted the importance of equitable restoration efforts for long-term sustainability in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
