In response to declining water quality on Marco Island, the City Council considered a proposal from businessman Dan Davies to create habitat islands from dredged sediment in local canals. Marco Island’s waterways have been classified as impaired due to high nitrogen levels and low dissolved oxygen, negatively impacting aquatic life. Since 2021, the city has undertaken measures to improve water quality, including a restoration plan accepted by environmental agencies. Davies proposed the Coastal Habitat and Water Quality Initiative (C-HAWQ), which would involve dredging sediment to construct approximately 100 acres of islands planted with native vegetation. The project aims to be cost-effective compared to traditional dredging methods and maintain boat traffic during construction. The City Council showed support for further exploration of the project, recognizing its innovative approach to restoring water quality.
