A study by Ding et al. (2023) in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres investigates extreme stratospheric wave activity during winter and its effects on surface temperature and pressure in North America, particularly its influence on atmospheric rivers (AR) impacting the U.S. west coast. The research identifies a link between stratospheric and tropospheric planetary wave coupling. The analysis of CMIP6 climate models reveals that while some accurately simulate this coupling, others show biases due to poor representation of stratospheric waves. The findings suggest a need for enhanced stratospheric modeling in climate predictions.
