A multi-million dollar project is underway to restore the Nanticoke Creek in Luzerne County, which suffers from blockages and acid mine runoff, making it uninhabitable for aquatic life. The Earth Conservancy leads the $20 million Nanticoke Creek Watershed Restoration, funded by state and federal grants. Mining activities historically rerouted waterways, resulting in blockages that disrupt water flow to the Susquehanna River and cause pollution. The restoration includes a clay lining to prevent underground drainage and the planting of 5,000 trees to replace those removed. The project aims to create a healthy stream by the end of 2027, building on the success of previous restoration efforts like the Eepsy Run project.
