Federal funding of about $4 million has been released to restore lands and streams in the fire-affected Upper Colorado River Basin around Grand Lake and Rocky Mountain National Park. This funding, previously frozen, is managed by Northern Water, which collaborates with federal agencies like the U.S. Forest Service.
Congressman Joe Neguse did not comment on the funds amid broader national cuts in federal grants linked to the Trump administration’s budget reorganization. While $282 million in federal funds were retained by state agencies, $76 million was lost, raising concerns about local funding.
Specifically, $761,000 has been allocated to the Kawuneeche Valley Restoration Collaborative for ecosystem recovery, while $3.3 million will aid in restoring areas affected by the East Troublesome fire, which charred nearly 200,000 acres in 2020. This restoration is deemed crucial for safety, economic sustainability, and maintaining access to the forest for tourism.
