The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Chesapeake Bay Office announced $44 million in grants for bay restoration, funded through the Innovative Nutrient and Sediment Reduction Grant and Small Watershed Grants programs. This funding will restore 290 acres of wetland, establish 45 miles of fencing to protect streams from livestock, and create 75 miles of forest buffers, reducing nutrient pollution by nearly 80 million pounds annually.
Grant recipients include Ducks Unlimited, receiving $1.1 million for wetland and tree buffer restoration in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia, and Trout Unlimited, which will use over $900,000 to enhance brook trout habitat in New York and Pennsylvania. The Evergreen Heritage Center Foundation received $25,000 for conservation education for 2,000 Maryland students. The Watershed Alliance of York secured nearly $850,000 for forest buffers and freshwater mussel conservation in York County, PA.
