In June 2023, Canadian wildfires are expected to bring smoke to Western Pennsylvania, coinciding with sudden summer temperatures. After a cool May, temperatures could jump to the high 80s by Wednesday, compared to the low 50s and 30s earlier in the week. Meteorologist Andrew Kienzle noted this “weather whiplash” and stated that the wildfire haze may slightly cool temperatures by blocking sunlight but will not severely degrade air quality. Though most residents should feel fine, those with respiratory issues, like COPD or asthma, should take precautions, such as staying indoors and using air conditioning. Dr. Tariq Cheema emphasized that while the smoke isn’t as severe as in previous years, it can still cause mild irritation for others.
