Wildfires significantly impact ocean ecosystems, even when they occur miles inland. They release chemicals and pollutants that contaminate waterways, harming water quality and disrupting habitats. Increased nitrogen and phosphorus from burned vegetation lead to harmful algal blooms that deplete oxygen, creating dead zones where marine life cannot thrive. Ash from wildfires can cover plankton, affecting the food chain and ultimately harming fish and other sea life.

In April 2023, a fire in Ocala National Forest released debris into nearby waterways, increasing turbidity and reducing sunlight for phytoplankton growth, which is vital for aquatic food chains. Interestingly, firefighters cannot use seawater to combat blazes, as it damages equipment and is less effective for cooling.

Recognizing the complex challenges faced by firefighters is essential. Captain Cathy Eagle, a seasoned charter captain, emphasizes the importance of appreciating their efforts.
