On June 24, Rim to Rim Restoration updated Moab City Council on the use of a $5.2 million federal grant aimed at reducing wildfire risk. The grant, from the U.S. Forest Service, focuses on Mill and Pack Creek corridors and Matheson Wetlands, with collaborative efforts involving several local entities.

The funding will support fuels mitigation, revegetation, outreach, and education until 2029. Prioritization criteria include hazards (50%), proximity to infrastructure (25%), and need/complexity (15%). The project also aims to restore native species and stabilize creek banks post-invasives removal.

Public education efforts have included materials on fire hazards and community engagement. Additionally, Moab will contribute $130,000 annually for the grant’s duration for creek corridor maintenance.

In related efforts, Grand County approved a $53,000 contract for a LiDAR project to improve flood mapping, essential for effective vegetation management in flood-prone areas.
