In 2025, wildfires in the EU have devastated over 1 million hectares, setting a record a month before the fire season ends. These fires have burned four times more land than the average for this period in the last 20 years, affecting communities and producing 37 million tons of carbon dioxide. The extreme conditions, exacerbated by climate change, have been driven by prolonged heatwaves and dry vegetation following a wet spring. Experts note the increasing likelihood of severe fire events and hidden health impacts from smoke. The EU’s Copernicus service reported unprecedented emissions from wildfires, particularly in Spain, causing significant air quality degradation. Though weather conditions may ease soon, scientists warn of a growing trend in wildfire severity and stress the need for adaptation to this new reality.
