During the recent Jacket Thrive Intersession, the Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District hosted a “Let’s Get Wild” camp with Mississippi State University’s Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture, focusing on water conservation and environmental careers. Participants engaged in hands-on activities to learn about water treatment processes, water recycling, and the role of environmental scientists. Activities included simulations demonstrating how plants help manage water flow and prevent soil erosion.
Beth Baker, the assistant director for MSU Extension for Environmental Stewardship, led the sessions. This partnership with MSU, ongoing since 2022, aims to provide students with practical learning experiences and insights into future careers. Jacket Thrive camps, held twice annually, offer individualized learning opportunities for struggling students and target specific interests.
