Extreme heat is increasingly affecting trout in the Kennebecasis watershed, according to Ben Whalen from the Kennebecasis Watershed Restoration Committee. Warmer temperatures stress the trout, making them less aggressive and active. To protect the fish during summer, a section of the river is designated for fly fishing only from July until the end of the season. This method, using barbless artificial flies, is gentler on fish, allowing for easier release and minimizing injury. Anglers are advised to avoid fishing when water temperatures exceed 18°C and to find cooler areas for better fish survival. These conservation policies have been in place since the early ’90s, aimed at safeguarding local fish populations.
