The University of Nevada, Reno, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the Tahoe Science Advisory Council, is launching the Tahoe Environmental Observatory Network (TEON) to assess the health of Lake Tahoe’s watersheds and ecosystems. This initiative aims to expand beyond the lake itself to include surrounding streams, wildlife, and weather patterns.

Key figures like Sudeep Chandra and Gina Tarbill emphasize a holistic approach to understanding how forest changes affect the lake. TEON will deploy a grid of high-frequency sensors to monitor ecological changes in real-time, allowing for immediate assessments of environmental conditions.

The project aims to address urbanization’s impacts and establish a comprehensive monitoring system across diverse habitats. By collecting a wide array of data, TEON seeks to predict future changes in the ecosystem, particularly concerning climate change and urbanization.

Notably, TEON includes interdisciplinary collaboration among multiple organizations, making data publicly accessible through a user-friendly platform. This initiative not only aims to protect Lake Tahoe but also serves as a model for studying environmental changes in other ecosystems, highlighting the importance of understanding climate impacts for future conservation efforts.
