Caltrans has released the Draft Environmental Document (DED) for the $107.4 million Grass Valley Wildfire Evacuation Route Project along State Route 49. The project aims to improve climate resilience by widening road shoulders, enhancing traffic flow during emergencies, and installing a two-way left turn lane. It also includes upgrades to bridges, pavements, guardrails, and culverts.

The public can review the DED from December 11 to January 12, with comments accepted via email. A public meeting will be held on January 7 at the Nevada County Government Center. The project is funded by $72.4 million from Senate Bill 1 and a $35 million contribution from the Nevada County Transportation Commission. Construction is expected to start in fall 2027 and conclude by the end of 2030, depending on weather and materials.

Caltrans encourages community engagement and emphasizes safety in construction zones.
