The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has announced funding for 16 projects aimed at restoring and enhancing salmon and steelhead habitats, allocating over $10 million through the Fisheries Restoration Grant Program (FRGP). This initiative is part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s broader strategy to rebuild California’s salmon populations, particularly in response to climate change.

The projects include removing barriers to fish passage, enhancing habitat complexity, and supporting educational conferences on salmonid restoration. For instance, the South Yuba River Citizens League received $1.8 million for a habitat restoration project, while Trout Unlimited was awarded $717,463 for enhancing instream habitats.

These efforts align with the California Salmon Strategy for Hotter, Drier Future, aiming to improve creeks and rivers’ health statewide. CDFW is also inviting new proposals for the 2026 solicitation, with a focus on sustainable water resource management and habitat restoration to support salmon recovery in California.
