A wildfire in South Florida has burned over 25,000 acres in the Everglades, with smoke expected to impact Highlands County by mid to late morning on Wednesday. Residents may experience hazy conditions and smoke odors due to shifting winds. Highlands County’s drought index is extremely high, raising concerns about fire risks. A burn ban is currently in place until April 9, 2026, prohibiting activities that could ignite fires. The situation escalated from a fire initially covering 5,000 acres, which has since grown significantly, as confirmed by satellite imagery from NOAA.
