Doug Besler has worked with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission for nearly 30 years and is now the chief of restoration for Hurricane Helene recovery. A new $290 million Good Neighbor Agreement with the U.S. Forest Service allows the commission to conduct recovery projects in the Pisgah and Nantahala forests over the next 10 years.
Efforts will include removing 10,000 acres of downed trees, restoring streams, and repairing infrastructure like roads and culverts. Besler emphasizes the importance of maintaining healthy watersheds to support local tourism. The first year will focus on assessing restoration needs and creating detailed plans for recovery across key areas.
