The St. Louis River restoration, costing nearly half a billion dollars, has taken nearly a decade to address toxic industrial pollution. The latest project at Thomson Reservoir has completed soil remediation, removing over 225,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment. Multiple agencies, including local, state, and federal bodies, collaborated on this effort, highlighted by Anne Vogel from the EPA as “monumental.” Future work will focus on monitoring water quality and fish habitats. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is set to undertake the final restoration project, Mud Lake, aiming to remove the river from the Great Lakes’ area of concern by the early 2030s. The ongoing cleanup is seen as a model of successful collaboration for environmental recovery.
