High school students in Solano County are engaging in hands-on environmental science by participating in “biomonitoring field trips” to local creeks. Under the guidance of the Solano Resource Conservation District, students gather biological and chemical samples to assess watershed health. The data, including nitrogen levels and bug species counts, will contribute to a larger study by Dr. Patrick Edwards at Portland State University, benefiting the Vallejo Watershed Alliance. Educators aim to instill a sense of environmental stewardship and awareness, emphasizing the importance of water conservation. Over 15 years of data suggest improvements in creek health, driven by community awareness of pollution risks.
