The Aberjona River restoration project in Davidson Park has advanced after the Select Board approved plans to seek $500,000 in grants from the NRD Trustee Council for environmental remediation. Reduced to fit grant limitations, the plans focus on bank restoration rather than dredging due to funding constraints established in 2022.

The river’s original course was altered in the late 1800s, leading to severe erosion exacerbated by increased development and impervious surfaces. The new design includes using woody debris and rock weirs to restore banks and manage water flow, promoting sediment accumulation and fish passage. Though the project aims for self-sustainability, ongoing maintenance costs and invasive species management remain concerns.

Select Board Chair Anthea Brady expressed support for the project, emphasizing its benefits for both the river and the park.
