A town’s river restoration project, initiated in cooperation with the provincial government, has successfully removed 6,000 cubic meters of waste this year, representing 56% of the town’s annual garbage collection. Mayor Patrick Caramat noted that over 80% of the waste consisted of silt, mud, and other accumulated materials that hindered river flow. The materials are repurposed for backfilling in schools and local recovery facilities.
The project, which includes clearing bottlenecks in the Parongking and Marusay rivers, aims for comprehensive watershed management, encompassing a 16-kilometer corridor across eight barangays. Additionally, 25 newly identified creeks will be integrated into predictive models to prevent illegal dumping and flooding.
The initiative has provided jobs to 40 displaced workers and has improved irrigation for around 70 farmers in Barangay Quesban, thereby safeguarding food supply and enhancing livelihoods.
