The Adyar river restoration project in Chennai is finally seeing progress after nearly three years of stagnation. The Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT) is preparing a detailed project report (DPR) and recruiting key personnel for the project. Member-secretary Simranjit Singh Kahlon confirmed that detailed designs are underway, but there’s no timeline for completion or actual restoration work yet.
Challenges remain due to encroachments in areas like Saidapet and Kotturpuram, which have stalled progress on incorporating essential infrastructure into the DPR. A previous relocation plan for around 1,000 families from Thideer Nagar has also faced delays. The ₹1,500 crore project, first mentioned in the 2023 state budget, has seen no advancement despite being mentioned in subsequent budgets. Discussions are ongoing to finalize housing plans for displaced residents while ensuring the river’s restoration benefits the public.
