A severe heatwave is affecting Italy and the Balkans, resulting in hundreds of deaths, particularly among older populations. Italy has placed 22 cities under red heat warnings, while Croatia and other Balkan countries face extreme temperatures above 35°C (95°F). Wildfires have erupted, especially in coastal areas, despite some regions experiencing localized rainstorms that mitigate fire risks.

The heatwave, which began on June 20, has overwhelmed healthcare systems and infrastructure, leading to over 1,300 reported excess deaths in Europe, with France accounting for 1,000. Most victims are elderly, and funeral homes are struggling with the increased death toll. Scientists link this event to human-caused climate change, making such extreme temperatures significantly more likely. The World Health Organization emphasizes the dangers of heat stress, noting that European infrastructure isn’t equipped for these high temperatures.
