The Truckee River Watershed Council (TRWC) has initiated the Coldstream Canyon Lower Floodplain Restoration project in Truckee, California. This project aims to restore critical habitats, enhance ecosystem functions, prevent erosion, and improve water quality. It will create 3.2 acres of floodplain and 1.9 acres of riparian habitat by removing nonnative species and stabilizing banks.

Tiffanee Hutton, TRWC project director, highlighted the project’s significance in repairing ecosystem health affected by past mining and development. Located along the Legacy Trail near Donner Lake, work will be completed this fall, with the trail remaining open for users. Previously, a similar project by TRWC prevented approximately 200 tons of sediment from entering the Truckee River annually.

In collaboration with partners, TRWC has restored over 50 acres of degraded land in Coldstream Canyon. More information can be found at truckeeriverwc.org.
