The San Juan Mountains Association (SJMA) has been actively involved in youth watershed stewardship this spring and summer, collaborating on the Pagosa Gateway Project to restore areas of the San Juan River. This initiative, led by the Upper San Juan Watershed Enhancement Partnership and the Town of Pagosa Springs, aims to prevent erosion, improve habitats, and create a resilient river environment.
In June, SJMA launched a River Stewardship Camp for middle schoolers, teaching them fly-fishing and watershed protection, alongside low-tech restoration techniques. July saw a Junior Naturalist Field Camp, where younger participants learned about ecosystems and river management from various partners, including Five Rivers Trout Unlimited and Confluence Collective.
WEP will host a free film event on August 19 to premiere a documentary titled “Reviving Our River: The Pagosa Gateway Project,” showcasing the restoration efforts. Attendees can engage in a Q&A with project team members after the screening. Tickets are available at pagosamovies.com.
