Scaling Mauna Kea in Hawaii, at 33,500 feet including its underwater base, surpasses Mt. Everest’s 29,035 feet elevation. Although Everest is the highest point above sea level, Mauna Kea is taller when measured from base to summit. The ocean floor features a diverse landscape, including the continental shelf, abyssal plains, mid-ocean ridges, and ocean trenches. The continental shelf is shallow and nutrient-rich, while abyssal plains, covering 70% of the ocean floor, are deep and less productive. The mid-ocean ridge is a vast underwater mountain range, and ocean trenches, like the Mariana Trench, are the deepest oceanic regions. This complex underwater terrain concludes with a return to continental shores.
