Shona Blewett, Education and Outreach Manager at Geoscience Australia, discusses how both natural processes and human activity shape Australia’s landscapes and landforms. While tectonic movements, weathering, erosion, and deposition are natural influences, human actions—especially urban development—significantly alter these landscapes. Urbanization, with 90% of Australians living in cities as of 2016, leads to land clearing and habitat disruption, impacting biodiversity. Agricultural and mining practices further change the environment, and human-induced climate change exacerbates weathering and erosion. The video also highlights artificial landscapes, such as Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin, created through human intervention. Overall, the discussion emphasizes both the benefits and degradation that result from human alterations to the landscape.
