A historic agreement was signed in Sacramento to secure the future of the Eel River, benefiting the Russian River watershed and addressing past injustices against Eel River tribes and stakeholders. After over six years of negotiations, the multiparty pact focuses on river restoration and modernizing water diversions from the Eel River. The Round Valley Indian Tribes will receive water rights and $1 million annually from Russian River beneficiaries, along with a $750,000 contribution to a river restoration fund. Officials emphasized the painful history of water resource diversion without stakeholder consent and the need for ongoing collaboration to implement the agreement. California pledged $18 million to support restoration efforts, marking a commitment to repair past practices. The successful negotiation is viewed as a model for cooperative conflict resolution in water disputes, contrasting with the common approach of litigation.
