The Mad River watershed is predominantly private land, limiting conservation efforts despite supplying 70% of Humboldt County’s drinking water. Greg King, Executive Director of Siskiyou Land Conservancy, highlights that a recently donated property near Maple Creek has been restored since 2016 with the previous owner, Ken Miller. Restoration efforts involve clearing debris and replacing culverts to improve the ecosystem, crucial for species like Coho salmon. Siskiyou Land Conservancy plans to expand these projects through additional land acquisitions and conservation easements, aiming to protect the area’s biodiversity and ensure access for people while prioritizing habitat conservation for wildlife.
