Recent wildfires in North Gyeongsang have caused unprecedented forest damage, burning nearly 90,000 hectares (222,395 acres), which is almost double the previously estimated 45,157 hectares by the Korea Forest Service. This incident marks the most severe destruction since the East Coast wildfires in 2000. A joint investigation revealed that the actual damage was significantly underestimated, prompting criticism of the Korea Forest Service. The term “affected area” includes zones within the fire line, which may lead to discrepancies in damage assessments. Authorities are set to announce the official damage size soon.
