The Amite River Basin Commission praised Governor Jeff Landry’s signing of laws HB 802 and SB 367, establishing the Watershed Restoration and Conservation Fund for the Amite River Basin. This legislation creates a funding mechanism for watershed restoration, conservation, and flood-risk reduction, particularly in areas affected by sand mining.

The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority will oversee fund distribution to the Commission for eligible projects. This collaborative approach unites state expertise with regional needs, crucial ten years after the devastating 2016 floods.

ARBC leaders emphasized the importance of a basin-wide strategy for flood protection, advocating for regional solutions over isolated efforts. Local government leaders expressed that the legislation enhances cooperation for better flood management. Ultimately, the Commission aims to work with various stakeholders for long-term resilience and flood mitigation across the basin.
