In 2016, NOAA’s Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) program allocated over $7 million for 98 K-12 projects nationwide, promoting hands-on environmental education. Activities include middle and high school students in Baltimore engaging in Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs) at the National Aquarium, and high schoolers in Florida earning science dive certifications to study local reefs. B-WET serves seven regions: California, Chesapeake, Great Lakes, Gulf of Mexico, HawaiĘ»i, New England, and the Pacific Northwest. Each project aims to foster stewardship among students and teachers, emphasizing local ecosystems and conservation efforts. Several projects were awarded funding ranging from $30,000 to over $375,000, with continuing support for 46 previous awards.
