Rural Colorado counties received over $13.5 million in federal funding through the Secure Rural Schools (SRS) program, which supports public schools and local services. This funding was reauthorized in 2025 after a two-year lapse, following a bipartisan effort involving multiple legislators. Payments were made to 42 Colorado counties, with notable amounts delivered to Pitkin, Garfield, Grand, Summit, Eagle, and Routt counties. The SRS program relies on U.S. Forest Service revenue and aims to provide a stable funding source essential for rural regions. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz emphasized the importance of these payments for sustaining local infrastructure and community partnerships.
