Teachers in Pennsylvania are enhancing environmental education by using a NOAA grant to engage students with their local ecosystems and address environmental issues like chronic wasting disease in deer. Teacher Maddie Bentz revamped the curriculum to focus on local, relevant topics, fostering community awareness and student engagement.

The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) grant supports hands-on outdoor education, but proposed budget cuts by the Trump administration threaten this funding. Since its inception, the grant has positively impacted over 700,000 students and 25,000 teachers.

Field trips funded by the grant have allowed students to apply their learning in real-world contexts, significantly enhancing educational experiences. Advocates now urge Congress to maintain funding for this crucial program, emphasizing the importance of outdoor learning in science education.
