Governor Gavin Newsom announced that State Route 1, or Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), will reopen to all drivers on May 23 at 8 a.m., ahead of the Memorial Day weekend. This early reopening follows extensive emergency repairs due to wildfire damage, allowing two lanes in each direction between Temescal Canyon Road and Carbon Beach Terrace.

While PCH reopens, access to the Palisades is restricted to residents and authorized personnel, with increased security checkpoints from five to 16. The California Highway Patrol will enforce a 25 mph speed limit and assist with patrols, while traffic signals will function as all-way stops at certain intersections.

Drivers should expect delays, as the right lane may close daily for repairs and stopping in burn areas is prohibited. Governor Newsom emphasized the completion of repair efforts by multiple agencies, showcasing a successful recovery initiative.
