A multi-million-dollar restoration project on the Maumee River, focusing on Clark and Delaware/Horseshoe Islands near Walbridge Park, has been completed. A ribbon-cutting celebration marked the end of this nearly two-year effort aimed at improving water quality and habitats. The project, which cost about $13.5 million, restored parts of the islands, which have lost over 60 acres since the 1940s.

Project leaders emphasized its importance for Lake Erie, describing the islands as natural “kidneys” that filter nutrients from the river. This restoration is part of broader efforts in the Lake Erie Watershed to address harmful algal blooms. Additionally, the project enhances recreational opportunities at Walbridge Park, with free guided kayak tours available on September 20 and 21.
