Natalie Brown, a master’s candidate at Commonwealth University-Lock Haven, is conducting innovative research on stream restoration by examining how limestone can enhance the recovery of freshwater mussels in the West Branch Susquehanna River. Her work, part of a $410,000 Mussel Restoration Project funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, focuses on aragonite, a mineral pivotal for mussel shell growth. Brown’s experiments utilize mini-stream ecosystems to test how the presence of limestone influences mussel growth compared to sandstone.

Freshwater mussels are critical for ecosystem health, but their populations have drastically declined due to various environmental challenges. Brown’s research will help determine optimal sites for reintroducing mussels, which have been depleted due to pollution from mining. Her efforts are supported by local conservation organizations and aim to improve the river’s water quality and habitat. With aspirations for a future in environmental science, Brown’s work underscores the importance of geology in aquatic restoration, offering hope amid climate challenges.
