Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has called for a full investigation into the Los Angeles Fire Department’s handling of the Lachman fire, which reignited into the devastating Palisades fire. In a letter, she expressed concern over reports that firefighters were ordered to leave a smoldering site just days before it rekindled. Federal authorities have labeled the fire as intentionally set. Text exchanges among firefighters revealed objections to leaving the site due to ongoing smoldering, highlighting a lack of communication and oversight. Critics, including mayoral opponent Austin Beutner, demand accountability and reform within the LAFD, especially regarding protocols to prevent future fires. Residents affected by the fires criticize the department’s response as inadequate and frustrating.
