Grand Rapids is set to transform its riverfront, transitioning from years of planning to action with a significant $11 million funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the Lower Grand River Habitat Restoration Project. This initiative aims to restore natural river features, enhance flood resilience, and reconnect the community to the Grand River. Mayor David LaGrand hailed this as a historic milestone, emphasizing its long-term benefits.
With federal and state approvals completed, construction will begin, starting with the removal of four low-head dams and the installation of natural rock structures. The project is designed to improve aquatic habitat and recreational opportunities. Matt Chapman, executive director of Grand Rapids Whitewater, expressed pride in moving from planning to implementation and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. Construction is expected to last about two years.
