Aty Rotter lost her family home and the Pasadena Jewish Temple in a devastating fire that affected a large area of Los Angeles County. The fire destroyed cherished family items, including heirlooms from her family’s escape from Nazi Europe. As the Passover holiday approaches, the temple’s community reflects on resilience and togetherness, drawing parallels to the Passover story of liberation. Many members were displaced, with 30 families losing their homes. The temple has received significant community support, relocating services to other venues and hosting fundraising efforts.

Despite the trauma, efforts are underway to replenish lost sacred items through initiatives like a registry for Judaica. Congregants have expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, allowing them to reclaim a sense of Jewish identity and history. The fire has reshaped their experience, making it an integral part of their narrative.
