Macao is anticipated to experience rising temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events, including super typhoons and severe rainstorms, according to Leong Weng Kun from the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG). He noted that meteorological records in Macao have been consistently broken in recent years, correlating with the World Meteorological Organization’s report stating that 2023 is the hottest year on record globally. SMG officials reported several record-breaking temperatures for March and April, as well as unprecedented humidity levels in June. Leong mentioned that the typhoon season, lasting until October, has seen an increase in super typhoons due to higher sea surface temperatures. Currently, Macao is under a yellow hot weather alert, with temperatures projected to remain above 33 degrees. Meanwhile, other parts of China face severe climate change impacts, including flooding and drought-related issues.
