The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has awarded $17.7 million in 2026 Countywide Action Plan (CAP) grants to support projects aimed at reducing nutrient and sediment pollution in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. A total of 222 projects are expected to decrease nitrogen by over 113,493 pounds/year, phosphorus by 28,816 pounds/year, and sediment by 11.8 million pounds/year. Governor Josh Shapiro was recently elected chair of the Chesapeake Executive Council, and the revised Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement sets goals for addressing pollution by 2040. The CAP grants, funded through state and federal resources, will help counties implement a variety of water quality improvement projects. All 34 counties involved are engaged in the Phase 3 Watershed Implementation Plan, aiming to enhance local water quality while supporting communities and landowners.
