The Southeast New England Program (SNEP) by the US EPA, established in 2012, focuses on preserving coastal environments for community prosperity. Since 2017, the SNEP Watershed Implementation Grants (SWIG) have awarded over $18 million to support collaborative initiatives among various organizations, addressing pressing environmental issues. SWIG funds innovative local projects, promoting regional learning and effective partnerships. Notable funded initiatives include dam removals to restore habitats, community resilience projects in New Bedford, sustainable developments in Pawtucket, and research on improving water quality. SWIG also emphasizes interstate planning and real-time water quality monitoring to enhance management decisions. Overall, SNEP aims to foster a healthier coastal ecosystem through local solutions.
