Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced the “Reclaim the Rivers” initiative, committing $89 million to clean and restore the Detroit and Kalamazoo Rivers, among other waterways. Led by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), this project aims to eliminate pollution, support wildlife revival, and improve habitats by 2040.
Nearly $50 million will focus on removing PCBs from the Detroit River, while $25 million targets restoration projects in the Kalamazoo River watershed. An additional $14 million will fund various river restoration efforts statewide, including dam removals and habitat improvements. The initiative is expected to boost Michigan’s economy through enhanced tourism and recreation. Joint project teams will collaborate with local governments, Tribes, and community organizations to implement these changes.
